The press conference live blogs just keep on coming, folks!
We’re through the weekend now, but E3 week is only just beginning. Join the Ground Punch staff as we give you all of our thoughts and reactions to Ubisoft’s E3 2017 press conference as it happens (or check the archive after the stream’s conclusion for a recap of all the biggest news and our hottest takes). We’re expecting big things from the French publisher, with newly announced games like Far Cry 5, The Crew 2 and Assassin’s Creed: Origins surely making an appearance, alongside…some new Rabbids + Mario thing? This will certainly be an interesting one. We hope you enjoy!
Well they really did pack in a lot of games in this conference, so props to Ubi for giving us a wide variety of titles.
Overall, I’m actually pretty impressed with Ubi this year. Their least cringey conference to date, I think. Also, way more new IP than I would’ve expected from the people with a rep for pumping out a million sequels.
I don’t think Blacklist sold amazing, Kelso. I doubt it’s dead, but it seems like they’re throwing more money at new IP this year so the studios that might have made a sequel are working on something else.
That was really sweet. Definitely a memorable moment.
What a hell of a way to close your conference, Ubisoft.
Incredibly emotional, passionate, and 100 percent all in, this is why video games rule.
Thanks for showing us, reminding us, Ubisoft.
No, time to take a nap.
Welp, no Splinter Cell again this year. I wonder what’s going on with that franchise.
Also, hey! A publisher that puts their devs on stage and humanizes them. Take notes, EA and others.
Now they’re going to hug Yves? This is just one emotional rollercoaster!
God bless Ubi. They’re French and weird, and their games fail as often as they succeed, but at least they fund weird outsider projects like this.
Aw man, more tears at this press conference. I really admire the genuine passion these guys have for their stuff.
Aww man, this is a lovely moment.
I wonder how connected the two are.
Setting is my kind of weird.
Well that was a neat cinematic trailer.
I think I’m into this? Never played the first game, but this thing looks really unique.
I’m not too sure what to make of this right now.
“Grab my chassis.” Ugh.
Oh hey, I think this is Beyond Good and Evil!
Huh, what could this be?
If I remember correctly, Far Cry 5 is scheduled for a spring 2018 release date.
Woah, some Cyberpunk game in Asia?
I’ll play another Far Cry. It’s been a while. Hope County looks like a cool place to murder people, at least.
What, Boomer brings you weapons?
Seem like Elizabeth from Bioshock: Infinite.
LOVING THE DOG
Looks like the player called in some sniper overwatch and a plane strafing run?
But with some AC Brotherhood style assistance features?
It looks good, but it looks like more Far Cry, which, at this point, isn’t a good thing.
Hey look, first gameplay reveal! This sure looks like Far Cry.
Montana is going to be gorgeous.
Not just any curse word, THE curse word!
“People are fucking scared.”
THE CURSE WORD!!!
I’m digging the setting, but man are people not going to like it lol.
Sweet, some Far Cry 5 stuff.
I like Imagine Dragons. It’s soulless arena rock, but God dammit it’s fun.
Far Cry? Gotta be Far Cry.
Eh, I’ll definitely pass on that.
Steep: The Road to the Olympics hits on December 5.
Steep: Road to the Olympics expansion out [date I didn’t read]
I’ve heard loads of trailers use this song, Sam.
How does an Imagine Dragons song just slip into so many trailers?
I cannot stand Imagine Dragons.
THIS SONG LITERALLY HAS A LOL SOUND EFFECT IN IT YOU CRAZY FOR THIS ONE
My god, an Imagine Dragons song.
And they’re using the Imagine Dragons song that was written FOR LEAGUE OF LEGENDS LMAO WHAT ARE YOU DOING UBI
Let me rephrase: you took too damn long.
HOW DO YOU MAKE SNOWBOARDING *NOT* FUN TO PLAY?
You’re taking too damn long.
I played Steep again yesterday. Tried for the third time to like it. Couldn’t do it.
This hurts me.
I wonder what Steep will bring us.
I was planning on jumping back into it.
This is painful for me. Steep triggers my PTSD
Wow, they’re actually bringing Steep on stage.
It’s cool to see a new IP from Ubisoft, though.
Oh no. Steep is on the stage. Why is Steep on the stage? Please get it off.
DEFINITELY not for me. I’ll be interested to see how many people are excited for this.
I don’t care about kids.
It’s for the kiiiiiiiiids
It’s bullshit for me, a retail employee. Lol.
I never thought, “Man, let me put my Gundam in this video game I’m playing.”
Why is it bullshit, Jer? They’re successful with kids, they’re not for us. I dunno, gameplay looks like it might be decent.
This is bullshit.
Great. Just great.
Starlink: Battle For Atlas out Fall 2018 on Switch, Xbox One, and PS4
It looked like No Man’s Sky with an actual story for a bit, now it’s just eeeeeehhhh.
Buy plastic space ships and put them in your videogame! Skylanders, eat your heart out.
Ok, they’ve immediately lost me.
What. The. Fuck. Was. That.
Oh no, this is a toys-to-life Switch game!
Wow, an actual new thing.
Oh wait, is this that fake game that was teased in the other ubisoft game?
Snow Drop engine, huh? This something new?
And now we’re going to space.
That was… Interesting. I think?
So you think they’ll close with Far Cry, or something new?
South Park: Phone Destroyer out later this year.
Featuring actual cock magic. You’re welcome.
A South Park mobile game, for all of you South Park fans!
South Park phone game. Oh dear.
That was horrendous, absolutely horrendous.
Whoever you are, you cannot sing.
Stop it. Please.
I feel like we’re supposed to know who this singing lady is. Do we?
I JUST WANT TO DANCE WITH SOMEBODY! DON’T MATTER WHO YOU ARE! YOU COULD BE A RACIST, I DON’T CARE!
And, of course, the fucking panda hit da folks before he dabbed over the stage.
This is bullshit.
Dabbing Panda. Check.
Lmao they even bother to put “Coming up: Far Cry and other new stuff” on screen since they know half the audience just tuned out.
BUBBLE BUBBLE BUBBLE POP!
THE JUST DANCE PORTION OF THE UBI E3 SHOW THAT WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!
FT. BUDGET DAFT PUNK AND A PETRIFIED AUDIENCE
They look like dancing Sub-Zeroes.
THE REAL STAR OF THE SHOW!
And now the moment everyone’s been waiting for, an awkward Just Dance performance!
YESSS THERE IT IS
I hope there isn’t a land component. That was the worst part of AC4.
Looks like a tease of a little supernatural stuff too. Oh, and there we go- Fall 2018 release.
I think the beta will give everyone the fill they need of this game.
No mention of a single player component, land component, or release date.
http://www.skullandbonesgame.com for beta access if you’re into that kind of thing.
I’d be interested in a beta for this, lol.
I’m with you, Sam.
I’m not interested in this at all, especially since it’s a rehash of Black Flag.
Unless there’s some cool land combat later on, I think I’m alllll the way out on this one, boys.
I think a multiplayer version of Assassin’s Creed IV’s ship combat could be really fun, but how long is anyone really going to want to play this? Doesn’t seem like it has a lot of legs to it.
Can you invade the other ship and steal their booty, though?
Ubisoft’s cool-on-paper-but-dead-in-two-months $60 multiplayer game.
And you just run the loot over with your ship to pick it up.
This looks like it’s going to be next year’s For Honor.
Skull & Bones: the moments in Black Flag where you’re sailing the seas, singing chanties, and engaging in ship combat.
Featuring classic sea shanties!
It looks exactly like ship combat in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
Looks a whole lot like AC4 ship combat, but multiplayer.
Oh hey, sea shanties! I like those!
Yup, looks like Assassin’s Creed ship combat.
Looks like Assassin’s Creed.
I’m curious to see how gameplay works.
5v5 PvP gameplay incoming. Maybe not what I want from my buccaneering game, but okay.
You called it.
Haha I meant a little too much focus on character to be a Total War trailer, Jer.
Let’s see what Skull & Bones is about.
Cool trailer, not a fan of the name.
I agree with you, Sam. Especially since we have no reason to feel attached to these characters, it was too move character development.
Skull & Bones is the name.
Looks like a little too much focus on characters in the trailer, though.
Or is this the Splinter Cell game we’ve been waiting for?
The ship combat in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag felt much better than the ship combat in Assassin’s Creed III.
Oh hey, I wonder if this could be a Total War game. Not impossible, if Creative Assembly has two teams.
Guess I missed that.
I mean, they said it was from one of Ubisoft’s most beloved worlds.
Lord, I hope not, Kelso.
Could this be a spin-off of Assassin’s Creed’s ship combat?
Okay, another pirate game.
I didn’t know Ubisoft made NEW games! This is exciting!
Let’s see what Ubisoft Singapore has been working on.
Something piratey is happening now. New IP?
A pirate game?
Hey, I have a question: what’s the next UbiArt game?
Yves is back with a new surprise!
Transference is the name of the title and its scheduled for Spring 2018.
Well that was certainly interesting.
Okay, and the game’s (is it a game?) actual name is Transferrence, out Spring 2018.
Looks like it’s a kind of VR psychological thriller, too.
Looks like a horror/thriller type deal. All live-action. Veryyy interesting.
Elijah Wood working with Ubisoft to create a VR title?
Spectrevision: some new Ubisoft VR product. Interactive movies?
South Park: The Fractured But Whole is slated for an October 17 release.
Elijah Woods is making a VR game with Ubisoft?
Elijah Wood making a VR game of some kind?
That was hilarious.
“He just called us douchebags inside my mind.”
South Park looks so awesome, I really hope it stops getting delayed.
Looks like a sequel to Stick of Truth, alright. I got nothing more than that to say at this point.
Or get an error code and get nothing, Jer :/
Oh, sup, South Park.
And time for some South Park: The Fractured But Whole.
Go to thecrewgame.com/beta to sign up for beta access to The Crew 2.
The Crew 2 is scheduled for an early 2018 release.
Crew 2 releasing early 2018
Well it sure is pretty! That’s something!
Jer, you’re crazy, this looks really nice.
Having some pretty, poppy music play as you’re driving around totally works. Also, this looks gorgeous and I’m on my knees praying it plays as well as it looks.
Stop showing me the game’s graphics: it’s not that beautiful.
Talk to me about the game’s mechanics. How does it feel? How have you improved compared to the first?
While Jeremy appears to fall asleep anytime someone talks on stage, I fall asleep during driving games.
I actually think the first game had some Lorde too. The aesthetic is “look at how pretty the USA is, fam!”. Or something like that.
Sick donuts, dude.
A Lorde track for this?
Does Lorde fit this kind of aesthetic?
Then again, what is The Crew’s aesthetic?
That’s the biggest piece of news here!
If the driving in this game doesn’t suck like the last game’s, I’m extremely down to play it. Roadtrip simulator was already a great idea on paper, and adding more vehicles to the mix seems like a great way to improve on the first.
A Lorde song makes an appearance.
There was almost no enthusiasm in that guy. I was about to fall asleep; he was boring af.
Why do you say that, Jer? The Forza games are limited to cars only.
And it’s The Crew 2.
Apparently, The Crew has expanded quite a bit.
Perhaps trying to capture Forza and Forza Horizon players?
These cars look fast. Also, looks like bikes, boats, and planes this time? Diversity is always nice, I guess!
Anyway, moving on.
It seems we’ve hit the tracks for The Crew 2.
Another car game? Great.
Thank you, Ubisoft for making it explicitly clear that the 30-minute gameplay reveal will be shown AFTER the show.
I hope you were listening, EA. No one wants to see 30-minutes of stale gameplay during a conference.
The Crew 2 trailer. Here we go.
And it looks like they’ll be showing 30 minutes of gameplay after the show today.
Okay, so there will be a 30 minute demo stream after the conference. Guess we’ll see more then.
But I mostly agree with Sam. The setting’s nice, but from what we’ve seen of gameplay, it looks pretty boring and samey to me.
…with no direct feed. You crazy for this one, Ubisoft.
It’s so weird seeing Chris Waters, formerly of GameSpot, on the other side.
Okay here we go, gameplay demo.
They showed gameplay at Microsoft’s show yesterday.
October 27 is the official release of Assassin’s Creed: Origins.
It was announced yesterday on Microsoft’s stage, alongside a gameplay trailer.
You can watch Microsoft’s AC:O gameplay trailer here:
Damned gorgeous trailer, though.
The setting excites me, but if it plays the same as the rest, I don’t think I’m interested. The stalest formula in video games.
Looks like just another cinematic trailer for AC. They haven’t actually showed a gameplay demo, have they?
What was the release date for Assassin’s Creed: Origins? October 10?
Lemme check that.
Ah, a taste of Egypt.
Damn, I didn’t think that Assassin’s Creed has been out for 10 years now.
It’s a good thing the franchise took a break after Syndicate.
August 29 is coming up real soon, too.
Nice way to start the conference, Ubisoft.
Giving those poor Switch owners something to chew on.
Now it’s time for some Assassin’s Creed.
That is REAL quick from announce to launch. Good on you, Ubi!
August 29th! Not bad!
August 29th release. WHAT?
I WANT YOSHI ON MY TEAM!
No release date for the game, though?
Not even a release window?
Wait, is this it?
That was a hell of a surprise, actually.
I didn’t think Nintendo would be capable of partnering with these types of mechanics.
This seems potentially really good. Not what I expected at all from Mario or Rabbids. Maybe not as kid-friendly as an action game, but still really neat.
Also, Rabbids are basically Minions, right? Now there’s a crossover we need!
Well this is definitely surprising. I don’t think anyone was expecting a turn-based strategy game with characters from the Mario and Rabbids universe.
That sequence with Rabbid Luigi was pretty impressive.
This combat is surprisingly deep.
I love that he just said “Rabbid Luigi.” We’ve all known that Luigi has been a rabid, rabid man.
Wait a second, holy shit, this is XCOM. In the mushroom Kingdom.
Okay so yes, this is a turn-based tactical Mario RPG. With Rabbids.
Kinda like Mario RPG?
Okay, this actually looks kind of…great? Really pretty, looks like a lost Mario Galaxy game (minus the rabbids).
I say that as they’re finally going to show us the game.
As touching as this is, we’re damn near 10 minutes into the conference and nothing’s happened.
Real love for Miyamoto on that team, for sure.
Tears in that dude’s eyes. Damn.
This shit is taking too damn long, though.
You’re boring me to sleep with all your talking.
Just show the damn game already; we know that’s what you’re building up to.
Gotta love Miyamoto’s love and passion. This dude has so much heart. I love it.
Miyamoto is still one of the most charming stage presences at E3. Gotta love him.
I bet Miyamoto-san partied hella hard during college.
Miyamoto is quirky af.
I bet he has a lot of fun at parties.
This is very strange.
And he’s carrying a bullet bill megabuster. What is even happening
Yep. Hype-ly confirming the Mario and Rabbids crossover.
And there’s Shigeru Miyamoto. Dope.
I’ve often wondered that very same thing, Yves.
W-w-wait…Shigeru Miyamoto on the UBI STAGE? Whaaaa?
That was kinda cute and funny.
We open with the rumored Mario and Rabbids crossover.
Opening with Rabids, nice.
I still truely, unironically like these weird little fuckers.
Starting things off with Rabbids thing. I wish I remembered what it was called.
And we’re underway.
Here we go. Sizzle reel time.
T-minus three minutes until Ubi’s conference starts.
Another day, another E3 press conference.
